FUTURE CHALLENGES AND LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. State Symposium on Local Economic Development Agencies
1-3 October 2012
Contents
Economic development, as an area of reflection and practice of governments and local communities, is in time of continuity and change. Continuity in relation to great principles of invervention: encouraging the creation of wealth and employment to achieve a higher life quality, progress towards achieving competitive and sustainable regional models. And change in relation to strategies and forms of organization and management. The current situation is thus multifaceted, the result of an evolution that accumulate diverse experiences that combine, in different ways and with varying results, the global economic dynamic action and the capacity of local agents.
In this sense, the commitment to innovation appears to provide the most successful alternatives; certain geographical areas show greater resilience to the crisis and, above all, we see that the forms of organization and management have an essential and growing role in the future of the territories.
In this situation, the Diputacion of Barcelona (Barcelona Provincial Council) is promoting a new model of territorial intervention through local economic development agencies. I’ts also integrated in the Network of Agencies for Local Development (REDEL) which is an Spanish network space for the strengthening and continuous improvement of organizations.
Under the Menéndez Pelayo International University Consortium of Barcelona (CUIMPB - Ernest Lluch Centre), this symposium aims to consider the point where we are after 25 years of local economic development policies in Spain, and to do so in future key taking into account the specificities of our country, its institutional and competence map and, particularly, the situation currently being experienced by our local authorities.
