In 1986 he was given the Chair as Professor of Economics at the University of Barcelona and between 1989 and 1995 he was Rector of the Menéndez Pelayo University, launching a new era of activity and public presence for the university. In parallel with constant public activity as a columnist, tertulia member and political commentator, he continued with his meticulous and learned projects, publishing particularly in the fields of history and economic thought. The fruits of his research were two barely finished works on the 18th century which, being historical, naturally had a direct connection to the problems experienced in our time. He possessed a profound knowledge of the issue of Catalan nationalism and consequently was highly interested in the Valencian Community and, in later years, the Basque Country. Indeed, he fell completely in love with the Basque Country, where he set up home and spent a lot of his time. He studied the Basque problem in depth and repeatedly declared his support of the Basque Country, its identity and culture. He opposed those who propagated violence and supported dialogue and the search for constitutional means of resolving the problems. It was because of these views that he was killed. Centre Ernest Lluch![]() Concert in remembrance of Ernest Lluch in the Auditorium From that moment on, some academic courses have been offered in the subject areas studied by Ernest Lluch, special activities (particularly those related to music) have taken place and his works have been gradually compiled.
